Figure 1: Tool Chest.
I keep my bigger ropemaking tools in this box. It also makes a good place to sit, if people come over for a visit.
Prior to this tool chest, many of these tools were kept in a willow laundry basket. But the crooks were too long, the basket wasn't built for the weight I was putting in it, the handles broke, et cetera. So I built a three foot by one foot by one foot box.
The boards are ten inches wide. Contruction is pegs and glue. The top of the box is in two layers, the upper layer made from two six inch boards glued edgewise, then pegged and glued to the top ten inch board.
Thin strips of oak are glued and nailed to the top and bottom with copper nails, to fight rust and corrosion.
There are rope handles at each end which can be tied over the top to keep the lid on. This also makes one handed carrying possible.
Figure 2: Tool Chest Contents.
These are my rope specific tools. I've got a collection of Cranks, Crooks, Lucets, Reels, Spinners, and Tops.
There is room for a few small balls of twine, some thin strips of brass (for aiglets), and some stray ends of rope.
